LACC plans first student housing in LA Community College District
East Hollywood — Los Angeles City College has a music center, soccer field, child development center, community garden, and, of course, classrooms. What you won't find on the approximately 30-acre campus, however, is student housing.
But that could change in a few years. In fact, LACC could be the first campus in the Los Angeles Community College District to have housing, according to college spokesperson Shaena Engle.
But the college has yet to decide where the housing would be built on the Vermont Avenue campus, she said. It’s still early in the planning process.
Currently, the nine-campus college district does not have student housing of any kind, Engle said. So planners sensed the mounting demand when they held a housing town hall on Oct. 19.
“What stood out most was the sense of urgency for safe, low-cost housing,” Engle said, “and how clear it has become that this basic need is critical to student success.”
The District hopes to have the housing completed and occupied by the end of 2028, Engle said. Officials are currently hiring architects and hope to select designers and builders by next summer, Engle said.
As for size, the District is looking at building dorms with somewhere between 300 and 500 beds at LACC, which an enrollment of about 15,000 students, according to its website.
