LACCD Supports President Biden's Recent Executive Action

June 24, 2024

By Juliet Hidalgo

Dear LACCD Colleagues and Students:

On June 18, President Biden announced an executive action to ensure U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children can apply for lawful permanent residence and stay together during the approval process. The policy also eases employment visa processes for DACA and Dreamers who have graduated from college in the U.S. The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) applauds President Joe Biden for taking such a bold, necessary action.

At the LACCD, our commitment to advocating for the rights of our undocumented community is unwavering. We have consistently and fiercely supported our DACA, Dreamer, and undocumented students and families through a range of initiatives, including the establishment of Dream Resource Centers at all nine colleges that provide a wealth of resources, such as partnerships with local nonprofits to provide legal resources, counseling, and financial assistance with grants and scholarships. President Biden’s action is a testament to the value of our immigrant families and communities and aligning perfectly with our ongoing advocacy of strengthening protections for mixed-status families and young people. We are here to support every one of our students, undocumented or otherwise, in pursuing their educational and professional dreams with renewed hope and determination. Our national platform and voice will continue to stand with and advocate for our students and their families.

“For our District, which educates many parenting and mixed-status families, this executive action is a beacon of relief and security. It will help students focus on their education, ensuring they are prepared to transfer or enter the workforce and make meaningful contributions to our campuses, economy, and communities,“ said LACCD Board President Nichelle Henderson.

These actions promote family unity by allowing U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children to apply for lawful permanent residence and stay together during the approval process. They also strengthen our economy by facilitating the employment visa process for college graduates with job offers, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers who can now contribute their skills and talents to the U.S. workforce.

We stand united in our steadfast support for all students and families, and we are inspired by this executive action, advancing a more equitable, compassionate society. Please join me in reinforcing the message that our LACCD students and employees, regardless of their immigration status, are safe, valued, and welcome here.
