Anco Veiga: Championing Academics, Athletics, and Environmental Advocacy at ELAC

Anco Veiga, an international student-athlete from Brazil, has not only excelled on the soccer field but has also made significant strides in academia, aiming for a future where environmental stewardship and ethical preservation take center stage.

Anco is striving to earn his bachelor’s degree in environmental science with a minor in philosophy, and his career aspirations are deeply rooted in his passion for sustainability and community service. He envisions himself spearheading eco-projects, inspired by the nonprofit initiative he founded in 2020, which provided material supplies to low-income communities while actively engaging in beach clean-up efforts to ensure environmental sustainability. Throughout his future career, his goal is to work on projects that promote environmental awareness and ethical conservation practices.

For Anco, the journey toward higher education was fueled by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to create meaningful change. His decision to attend college was driven by the opportunity to absorb knowledge, build a robust network of like-minded individuals, and contribute to environmental programs that benefit communities.

Reflecting on his time at ELAC, Anco speaks fondly of the significant personal and academic growth he has experienced. The college provided him with the opportunity to explore his areas of interest, offering exceptional professors and state-of-the-art lab facilities where theoretical knowledge seamlessly transitions into practical application. Additionally, Anco's involvement in the men's soccer team, where he served as captain for two seasons, honed his leadership skills and further enriched his collegiate experience.

“Something about ELAC that I genuinely appreciate is the friendly staff and people who are there to help you succeed in college. It helps guide students toward finding their passion,” said Anco.

One of the standout opportunities Anco found at ELAC was the Sea Grant project in collaboration with UCLA. This initiative provided him with invaluable mentorship and hands-on experience in environmental research. From conducting experiments in the ocean to engaging with research tools,

Anco's participation in the Sea Grant project left a lasting impact on his academic journey.

Beyond academics, ELAC fosters a culture of diversity and inclusivity through various initiatives and programs. Anco recalls memorable experiences such as the biweekly food pantry for low-income students and cultural events organized by the International Office. These initiatives not only promote inclusivity but also celebrate the many different cultures represented within the ELAC student body.

As a testament to his dedication to environmental advocacy and community engagement, Anco actively participates in initiatives like College Corps, which emphasizes the importance of community service and environmental stewardship. Through programs like beach clean-ups and support for low-income students, Anco finds fulfillment in making a tangible difference in the lives of others.

For students considering attending ELAC, Anco offers invaluable advice: seek out counselors early and often. They provide guidance and support across various departments. By leveraging the resources and opportunities available at ELAC, students can embark on a transformative educational journey that shapes both their academic pursuits and personal growth.

In conclusion, Anco Veiga’s journey at ELAC exemplifies the convergence of academic excellence, athletic prowess, and a steadfast commitment to environmental advocacy. As he prepares to embark on the next chapter of his academic and professional endeavors, Anco serves as an inspiration to his peers and a testament to the transformative power of education and community engagement.
