Jessica McCarns - Los Angeles Harbor College Student Spotlight of the Week

Jessica McCarns, a dynamic force at 36 years old, epitomizes the indomitable spirit of perseverance and triumph over adversity. Jessica's educational voyage commenced at Harbor College, where she embarked on a transformative path, earning an impressive seven Associate of Arts degrees. Despite facing formidable challenges, including financial constraints and the demands of motherhood, Jessica remained steadfast in her commitment to higher education, utilizing programs like CalWORKs and EOPS as springboards to her success. She continues to be involved in these programs, inspiring other students to stand firm in their dreams.

Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a tangible impact in medicine, Jessica continued her academic journey at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Here, she pursued a master's degree in biomedical science, honing her expertise and preparing herself for the challenges ahead.

Jessica's dedication and innovative spirit caught the attention of many when she participated in the BSEP NASA Pitch fest, where she secured second place with her visionary proposals to address critical issues facing underserved communities, particularly children. Her remarkable achievement underscored her commitment to leveraging science and technology for the betterment of society.

As Jessica stands on the cusp of her next chapter, she has the honor of completing an internship at Harvard Medical Laboratories and University, where she will immerse herself in the study of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This opportunity represents not only a culmination of her academic journey but also a testament to her unwavering determination to push boundaries and make a difference in the world of biomedical research. Her internship was a success! She is awaiting a response to whether some of her work is published. In June 2024, Jessica earned a double master's in urban and public health. What’s next? Jessica will apply to Ph.D. programs majoring in Biomedical Science.
