Standing Strong in Our Commitment to Education and Equity

Dear LACCD Community,

In light of recent discussions surrounding our current climate and reports regarding the status of the U.S. Department of Education, I want to reassure you that the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) remains unwavering in its commitment to our students, faculty, and staff.

Regardless of any external changes:

  • our doors remain open,
  • our resources remain intact, and
  • our dedication to student success remains steadfast.

Education is the foundation of opportunity, and LACCD will continue to provide the highest level of support and services with an ethic of care, inclusivity, and equity.

We are taking a proactive, multifaceted approach to anticipate, assess, and address the rapidly evolving national landscape and its growing challenges to higher education and, most importantly, to our students. We have been holding regular meetings with faculty and staff to share information, answer questions, and field concerns. I continue to work closely with all the college presidents as we navigate the changes and issues developing daily.

We live in unprecedented and uncertain times. So, let me yet again assert the principles by which we live and the principles that we will continue to vigorously uphold and defend. We are committed to:

  • Ensuring that every LACCD student has full and unimpeded access to education, regardless of race, gender identity, ethnicity, nationality or national origin, disability, socio-economic status, or religion.
  • Nurturing a global diverse community, recognizing that a diversity of perspectives enriches learning and deepens empathy.
  • Fostering a community that values and upholds mutual respect.

To all students—whether new, returning, or prospective—know that you are accepted and warmly welcomed here. Your dreams, aspirations, and educational journey matter to us. Our faculty and staff stand ready to support you in achieving your goals, and we will continue to foster an environment where learning and growth thrive.

Although there is no denying that higher education is a targeted topic, let’s also be reminded of our community’s perseverance and commitment to our values. Let’s navigate the “now” while simultaneously planning for a future beyond the chaos, as we did during the Pandemic. This is another of those moments. In a world increasingly marked by polarization, the ability to engage across differences, to think deeply and critically, and to uphold the dignity and worth of all people is not optional; it is essential. This is the education we provide and the education we must continue to defend.

If you have any concerns or questions, please know that our student services teams across the nine colleges are available and eager to assist you. We encourage you to stay informed and engaged.

Thank you for being an integral part of the LACCD family. Together, we remain resolute in our mission to serve and uplift our communities through the power of education.

With steadfast commitment,

Dr. Alberto J. Román, DPA
Interim Chancellor
Los Angeles Community College District
