Local Advocacy & Community Partnerships
LACCD’s community affairs program serves as a conduit between the District and several key local, state, and national partners, from government officials to community-based organizations, parents, and students. The goal of this program is to uplift the work of the District and highlight its commitment to the community. This commitment is aimed at increasing access to high-quality postsecondary education to improve the region's social welfare, enhance the local economy, and close persistent equity gaps, all with the ultimate aim of preparing future community leaders. These efforts also showcase the skills and work ethic of the District’s students and faculty members, helping to build support for community colleges and their mission. Below are some key partnerships:
LACCD PARTNERSHIPS
Student Housing Partnerships
Recognizing the transformative power of a college education, the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) has been unwavering in its commitment to supporting its predominantly low-income student body. In response to the housing crisis, LACCD has taken a multi-faceted approach. It has set its sights on an ambitious goal – providing affordable housing solutions to housing-insecure students. In 2022, LACCD successfully passed a $5.3 billion facilities bond, including up to $500 million for affordable student and staff housing. Recognizing the immediate need for housing, LACCD is not waiting to construct those units. Instead, it has partnered with nonprofit organizations to provide a safe and clean shelter for its homeless students. LACCD has initiated a formal partnership with five Los Angeles-based housing providers. These organizations play a crucial role in connecting students with reliable shelter and support services. They offer a variety of housing and wrap-around services to students in need of a safe, affordable place to live as they embark on their educational journeys.
Student Basic Needs Partnerships
In 2019, LACCD advocated for the creation of the Peer Navigator Program in partnership with the Los Angeles Housing Service Authority (LAHSA).
LACCD has been aggressively advocating for policies and funding to provide additional basic needs support for students. LACCD has secured support for student transportation assistance.
