Examination Process
All classified jobs are filled through competitive examination procedures. Promotional examinations are open only to permanent employees of the Los Angeles Community College District. Open Only, Open and Promotional, and Dual Certification examinations are open to employees and non-employees. When an examination is authorized on an Open Only basis and, upon completion of the examination process, one or more regular employees with permanent status in the District has/have passed the examination, a promotional eligibility list will be established.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications established for the applicable job classification in order to be admitted to the examination process. Tests and test content are related to the specific job and may include written tests, performance tests, training and experience evaluations, oral interviews, etc.
All tests given by the Los Angeles Community College District are job-related and designed to test the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to do the essential functions of the job. These knowledge, skills, and abilities are listed on the individual job posting and also in the class description (which can be accessed on this website by visiting our "Job Descriptions" section). You should then study material which you feel would directly or indirectly relate to these knowledge, skills, and abilities. For example, if two of the abilities required for a job are performing mathematical calculations and interpreting regulations, you could expect that some of the exam questions will cover math and reading comprehension.
Oral interviews which are a part of the testing process will be electronically recorded.
When there is more than one part to an examination, a candidate must be successful on each preceding part in order to compete in the next part. Those candidates who are successful on all parts of the examination will have their names placed on an eligible list.
Reasonable Accommodation
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Los Angeles Community College District provides reasonable accommodation to qualified individuals with covered disabilities on a case-by-case basis throughout the application, examination, and hiring processes and throughout employment. If an individual is in doubt about their ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of a position or possession of any other requirement noted in a class specification or job announcement, they should always apply for a position and request reasonable accommodation at the appropriate time.
